The Wetherill School

The Wetherill School offers mixed-aged classrooms where teachers work with small groups as well as individual children. Four-year-old and five-year-old children spend the afternoon in single-age classrooms. At Wetherill, we carefully consider the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of each child, and our projects and curricula are designed to support their growth and intellectual curiosity. While the school’s philosophy is rooted in the work of Maria Montessori, it also is informed by the child-centered educational approaches of other early childhood methods and theories, combining best practices in early childhood with Montessori materials. Our school offers open-ended free play materials for children to expand their imaginations, a plethora of art activities and materials to develop children’s creativity and Montessori materials in all curriculum areas: practical life, sensorial, math, language, geography, and culture. Outdoor nature education is an important part of our program, working along with educators from Riverbend Environmental Center to enhance our science curriculum. Our classrooms have co-teachers: one Montessori/PA state certified teacher and one PA state certified.
